Drone will not take off? Start with these safe checks

Capture the evidence, rule out simple causes and know when not to keep trying.

A take-off failure can come from setup, airspace, firmware, battery, propulsion or impact damage. The exact warning is the best place to begin.

Know when to stop immediately

Do not power or test an aircraft with serious impact damage, water ingress, a swollen or unusually hot battery, smoke, burning smells or visibly damaged propulsion parts. Move people away and seek appropriate safety advice if a battery is smoking or on fire.

Save the exact evidence

Photograph or screenshot the full warning message. Note the aircraft model, controller, app, firmware shown and what happened immediately before the fault appeared. Avoid repeatedly restarting or recalibrating merely to make a warning disappear.

Run only low-risk checks

With the aircraft powered off, remove the propellers before close inspection. Check that the battery is correctly seated and undamaged, the correct propellers are fitted, nothing is visibly obstructing a motor or gimbal, and the controller and app recognise the correct aircraft. Check the manufacturer’s manual, firmware notices and current airspace restrictions before attempting flight.

Choose the next sensible step
